    Cosy/whimsical adult fantasies WITHOUT romance

Had some lovely exciting recs from cosy fantasy forum and @siobhanwhimsy who even made a list on my req! (List pinned in comments - thank you @strawberrymilk!) Added these books to TBR but havent found something I want to read now
 (so neutral and very grateful)

    Looking for:

    • adult fantasy/protagonist
    • No romance (peripheral romance for side characters is okay) !!!!!!!
    • Whimsy!!!!!
    • Friendship/found family
    • Loveable characters
    • No abuse or graphic violence. Nothing too emotionally heavy
    • Ideally no epic fantasies or fantasies that r very targeted towards (cis) men (no hate, just not my personal style)

    For your inspiration
Whimsy examples from recent and current reads:

    • neverending hot chocolate from tea pot
    • Singing/magical dresses
    • Magical cakes/food
    • Magic shops
    • Cute animal friends (talking or not talking!)
    • Maps that lead u to a perfect book
    • Magical libraries/books
    • Enchanted or sentient trees/plants/flowers/objects/houses
    • Trees that sweep away snow
    • Portals
    • Statues that cry (NOT in a creepy way!)
    • Characters who naturally are a lil silly/whimsical/goofy and may not realise it
    • Winning a swordfight/fight to the death by simply having the best needlework
    • Conjuring (only) buttons from thin air (and they flick you in the head)

Please if you have any recs id love to know !!! And if you can give short desc about the book and how it fits what im looking for thatd help sm <3 thank you!!!! B

  • What do you consider more fragile paperback or hardcover books?

I was talking about this earlier with an acquaintance and she considers hardcovers fragile and paperbacks she can just throw in her bag without really worrying about it. With me, I’m always worried my paperbacks will tear to the point where I don’t let anyone else read it. If I can, I try to get the hardcover of the books I know I’ll reread a lot so it lasts longer. Now I’m wondering what other people think.

  • What type of reader are you: vacay edition

Soooo, what’s everyone’s reading preference when they travel or go on vacation? Physical book, kindle/e-reader, or audiobook?

Personally, I’m a kindle girlie when I’m on vacation. As much as I love a physical book, sometimes they’re too bulky to pack, or I just don’t want to mess up my book lol

  • When do you write your reviews?

I wait at least a day usually. 🙃 I need to let things settle in my brain.
Also, because I mainly read at night, I'm old (turned 39 recently lol), and only write reviews on my laptop.

  • Has anyone read an AI written book?

While I was browsing the top light novels list on Amazon earlier, I noticed a few giving off AI vibes. I’ve also noticed some AI books here as well, so I was wondering if anyone has. I’ll see a book that’s obviously AI, check out the author, and usually they have like 10 books all written and published in 2025.

I guess my question is, has anyone read an AI book to find out later it was AI? And if you could tell it was? I don’t have any interest in checking it out, but I always wonder if I might have accidentally read one already seeing as they’ve infiltrated so many genres and spaces.

  • Books you've lent and lost

Have you lent a book and never gotten it back? Did you forget to ask? Did they just love it so much you gave it away? Did you have to fight for it back? Were you the guilty party who kept the book?

So many possibilities. I have only once gotten back a book I've lent.

In highschool, when twilight came out, I was all about it. I was the nerd who took it to school and was reading it inbetween classes. A friend of mine (or so I thought (Joanna)) asked to borrow it, I said of course! I was excited to share something I loved. A couple of weeks go by and she hasnt mentioned if she was team Ed or Jacob (team Ed myself) and so I asked "did you like twilight?" She acted confused "what do you mean, I've never read it". Well okay then Jo, I was a little upset but whatever, I asked for it back since she didnt want to read it but she insisted I never lent it to her!

So like any completely emotionally stable 13yr old... I went crying to my mummy that I wanted my book back. My mummy took me to her house and talked to her mum, who made Jo give it back. Take that!!! She had even written her name in the front page, the gotdam audacity of this girl. Anyway I got my book back and she didnt speak to me anymore, win/win.

Now I only lend books that I'm happy possibly not getting back. What's your story?

  • How to Get Through Physical TBR as a Mood Reader?

I'm sure I'm not the only one who seems to be more of a 'book collector' at times rather than a reader.

As my collection grows, I stare at my shelves and realise how little of my physical TBR I've read. But I'm such a mood reader, that things like TBR jars don't work on me because I'll ignore them completely and go for what I feel like anyway.

Does anyone have any tips to combat this and push through the books you own?

Link Your Other Hobbies To Reading In The Fewest Steps

I've been having fun going through @catbitesback 's post least bookish hobbies? & trying to think of links to books/reading

Start at your non bookish / reading hobbies, & try to reach your reading in the fewest steps of association possible (either eye or ear reading) You could also comment hobbies you can't find a path for, to crowd source links!

A few of mine as examples:

Crochet → I read audiobooks & eye books as I crochet & I'm currently making cover tiles of my dog's favourite books so he can bring them to people to ask for them to be played for/read to him. (Solving the issue of no one else being able to find out which he wants when I'm not around) =1 link

Foraging → reading about foragable foods, materials & recipes. Those local to my area & also further afield. =1 link

Needle Felting → one of my first projects was making a mouse from the show Bagpuss → there are multiple accompanying books that, now I know they exist, I want to read because they look adorable. =2 links

Wild Swimming → It's Not That Radical by Mikaela Loach features wild swimming =1 link

I'm struggling to think of other examples of mine that are more than 1 or different kinds of connection, so I'll leave it there for now. Go forth & link fellow Boundlings!

  • Hobbies you do while listening to audiobooks?

    Hi!

What do you do when you listen to audiobooks?

I’m trying to find different things to do that don’t take me out of the story. Usually I’ll busy myself with cleaning, working, getting reading etc. but I want something to do when I’m in bed or sitting on the couch.

Let me know what you do! Thank you!đŸ˜šđŸ«¶đŸœ

  • Limited space, but I still want a home library

I mainly borrow books on Libby, but lately I’ve been wanting to grow my collection a bit more and annotate on my physical books themselves instead of in a separate notebook.

Wondering if anyone has some creative suggestions for making/utilizing space when floor space is quite limited at home. We have a cubby-like shelf that has a few spots that could be cleaned out to house some books, but other than that we don’t really have any more space on the floor for a bookshelf (could maybeeee squeeze in a couple wall shelves though). Help pls!

  • Favorites but not 5⭐

Would you rate all your favourite books 5 stars, or can they be favourites but in the 4 star realm?

I just started reading a book by T.Kingfisher and realised that she's become one of my go-to, favourite authors, and I absolutely love Paladin's Grace series (to the point that I cannot make myself read the last one, because then I won't have anything to look forward to) - but I didn't give it 5 stars when I first read it and I'm not sure I would now.

I'm fully at peace with this, but it did make me wonder - are all your favourites 5 stars, are all 5 stars your favourites?
