The prerequisite to tradition romantasy has always included explicit sexual content. I tried to follow that when I initially started creating this list, but soon realised how restrictive and reductive it can be. So I became lax with that criteria.

Since this list has grown in size, it has myriad of different queer fantasy. There are some books here that contain explicit content with heavy mature themes. There are also YA where romance takes a backseat. This goes against the ethos of any list, which is that it is supposed to be unique and exclusionary.

I believe this distinction is necessary, so I created a companion list to this one. All the YA romantasy and fantasy romance go there. I’ve transferred some titles over there, so they aren’t here.

dark rise is a neat gay romantasy series that could fit here :)

Can’t believe I forgot C.S. Pacat! I’ll add Captive Prince too.

2

Ooo you should add Faebound!!! I loved it so much. Lesbian romantacy elves.

Cool list! Also, I recommend you Legend of the White Snake by Sher Lee and Cemetery Boys and The Sunbearer Trials by Aiden Thomas (even though though for the last one, it’s not focused on romance, there’s still romance and it’s in a fantasy setting!)

I’ve added the first two. Since it is romantasy, I think the romance aspect should be the main focus (with fantasy, ofc). The Sunbearer Trial could fantasy romance more, I think.

PS unless Cemetary Boys is YA/middlegrade, I’ll include it. One of my criteria is that it be mature (not necessarily includes sex scenes). I know I’ve included some YA in here, but as long as they’re romantasy heavy, they stay (I think I need to make a different list).

Cemetery Boys is YA! Sorry! 😅
