I love fantasy with lots of Worldbuilding. The more complex the better. And if the plot gives room for speculation, even better.

    Pre Reading thoughts

I already read the book a few times and it's my favorite one in the middle-earth verse. Yes it is complicated but that's because it's packed with history and different versions Tolkien had in mind. Once you get a hang of it (even if it's only after reading the book at least once😂) it is also such a quick read. And you find new details or depths each time you read it. I can't put into words how much i love this book and how much joy it brings while reading 💚

These books are making me realize I probably have the sense of humor of a twelve year old and I can't even be mad about it.

  • Product Updates + New App Version [2/5/2026]

Hi everyone, we've just released a big app update with many quality of life improvements, bug fixes, and some new features. These are all available on web as well. Please make sure your apps are updated to the latest version, 1.1.1, to see these changes! As a reminder, you can check out what we're working on and what's coming up next via the public roadmap (in the footer on web, in the more menu on the app)

    Here's a list of updates:

    • New Main Quest badge tiers, now viewable on the app
    • ability to pin comments to your own posts, lists, and activity
    • improved search on app: UI enhancements to make searching for things that are not books easier, removed the auto-populated most searched books from the search widget
    • ability to track your progress in Time for audiobooks (HH:MM)
    • progress bar / breakdown by status added to Plan
    • estimated page count added to book page
    • you can enlarge a book cover on the book screen by tapping the book cover
    • rereading button (when you go to track a reread, the button says re-reading instead of reading)
    • sort reviews by star rating
    • filter options on Book Journey
    • new search, filter, and sort options on Browse All Lists and Browse All Quests screens
    • see more info about your followers and users you follow in the following/followers modals
    • changed the button on the home feed "currently reading" books from "post in forum" to "go to forum" for easier access to the forum + encouraging folks to check existing posts!

We're working on monthly wrapups, reading streaks, and some prep for more stats next! We will also be making some additional enhancements to Quests (like: a book recommendations section similar to the Community Recs on book pages, stats for how many users earned each badge tier, and a feed tab like the new feed tab on book pages)

Thanks everyone and happy reading, Jennifer + Lucy

Thoughts from 1% (page 5) | Letter to Milton Waldman

"Do not laugh! But once upon a time (my crest has long since fallen) I had a mind to make a body of more or less connected legend, ranging from the large and cosmogonic, to the level of romantic fairy-story -- the larger founded on the lesser in contact with the earth, the lesser drawing splendour from the vast backcloths -- which I could dedicate simply to: to England; to my country. It should possess the tone and quality that I desired, somewhat cool and clear, be redolent of our "air" (the clime and the soil of the North West, meaning Britain and the hither parts of Europe: not Italy or the Aegean, still less the East), and, while possessing (if I could achieve it) the fair elusive beauty that some call Celtic (though it is rarely found in genuine ancient Celtic things), it should be "high", purged of the gross, and fit for the more adult mind of a land long now steeped in poetry. I would draw some of the great tales in fullness, and leave many only placed in scheme, and sketched. The cycles should be linked to a majestic whole, and yet leave scope for other minds and hands, wielding paint and music and drama. Absurd."

Well, Sir... not so absurd, perhaps. I believe you have accomplished every single item on this list! The deeper I dive into his work and Legendarium, the more amazed I am. I think this is what we need more of in the world... carving out time for creation (or sub-creation, as he calls it). Not the fleeting TikTok videos kind, but the kind that consumes a person's life. Building, creating something big and meaningful. Not for instant gratification, not even necessarily for publication or sharing, but for the sheer joy, wonder, exploration, and discovery in the process.
