I think The Summer of Dead Birds by Ali Liebegott would be a good fit! It's short and simple and explores grief in the context of divorce and the death of her ex-wife's mother (if I remember correctly) and the anticipatory grief of losing a pet.

oh this is perfect!!! had no idea that book was in verse either, thank u :))

Hello, these are beautiful and maybe you aren't looking to add too much male gaze to this list, but the collections that moved me the most have been Refusing Heaven by Jack Gilbert and Without by Donald Hall.

I can also recommend Love, An Index by Rebecca Lindenberg.

these aren't necessarily written for grief catharsis, but definitely tackle themes of grief imo !! Crush by Richard Siken You Are a Little Bit Happier Than I Am by Tao Lin When My Brother Was an Aztec by Natalie DĂaz

4

ooo i’ll look i’ll look!!! i’ve been debating on whether to include books that don’t specifically deal with death loss versus other kinds of loss and grief, these are on my list to consider!!! love u mwah

oh moski i love this list!! i'm suddenly unable to think of any english mourning poetry for some reason, but one of the poems that always come to mind when i think of mourning is lyric of the wild geese's grave by yuan haowen (i'm too lazy to switch keyboards rn oof) (tl here)

it's about a wild goose whose partner was shot down by a hunter, so it dashes itself against the ground in its grief. the poem talks about how they flew "from south of the skies to north of the earth," "paired wing to wing in flight," then proceeds to ask: "Across the vastness of clouds upon clouds spanning ten thousand miles, / Over a thousand mountains enveloped by sunsets and snows, / Towards whom would a lone silhouette go?" yeah anyway i had to just go lie down and stare at the ceiling for a bit when i got to this line

edit: i'm only now realising that i may have already recommended this to you oops

hmmm grief is the thing with feathers by max porter may be fitting đŸ€” wonderful list, reminded me that some of these are in my tbr!

Edit: hang on
. Is that not a poetry book?????????? i could swear it was but google is telling me its a novella???????

2

that book seems so lovely even if it is a novella!! definitely want to read it now tysm đŸ„ș

2

hope you enjoy it!!

2

If you don't think the book fits this list, maybe it is a good suggestion for the "Literary fiction that reads like poetry" list.

It looks really interesting to me, thank you for mentioning it.
