Great list! If youd like recs, I suggest Amari and the Night Brothers!

5

Seconding this!

3

Thank you!!!!

The Phantom Tollbooth is an OG and it’s great! Ditto Anne of Green Gables!

4

oooh I forgot about phantom tollbooth!! I may not add Anne of green gables because it’s not so much fantasy or magical realism but I love that suggestion too!

3

A good and worthy list!! I think The Fire Within by Chris D'Lacey and the Warriors series by Erin Hunter would also be good recs for youngsters who like HP.

4

omg I loved both growing up
will add!!

2

Gregor the Overlander mentioned 🗣🗣

4

literally no one is ever talking about him!!

would the magic tree house books be a little too juvenile for this list? i remember reading them around the same time as the green book, and maybe a little earlier than artemis fowl!

2

ooooh I’m not sure! I think I’ll add it though because I feel middle grade is a pretty wide spectrum!

2

yayay!!

2

This is a wonderful list! Some middle grade favorites of mine were Fablehaven and The Sisters Grimm

3

omg I loved sisters Grimm!! I never read fablehaven but I’ve heard good stuff about it!

2

Omg someone else who read them!!!!!!!!

2

I don’t know if it fits the list but I also loved the Molly Moon series, it’s about a girl who learns hypnotism and goes on adventures

3

I FREAKING LOVED MOLLY MOON

2

She was my everything 😭

2

Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend is one you could add! It's not a completed series yet but it's such a cute, lighthearted page turner (with a giant talking cat)

3

it looks so cute!!

I think the Circle books (Emelan series) by Tamora Pierce would fit well in this list ♄

2

I’ll add the first one!! :-)

2

Great list! I also love The Girl who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making by Catherynne M Valente

2

Thank you!!

2

Great list! Love that you have Ella enchanted on here 😭 I was obsessed with that book as a kid

2

I love her !!!! (Ella)

2

Excellent concept! May I suggest:

The Worst Witch by Jill Murphy The Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud (verges on YA but I read the series when I was around 10-12)

2

thank you!!!

2

I loved the five kingdoms series growing up also!! very magical but without that jk rowling stain :)

2

thank you!! :-)

1

love this! for some recs, jen calonita has two good series: royal academy rebels (trilogy) and fairy tale reform school (6 book series) :) also the kingdom keepers series, and a more sci-fi series is the 13th reality by james dashner

If you want more recs, all of tamora pierce's quartets from tortall and the circle of magic are superb and perfect age range Especially the alanna quartet: the somg of the lioness

2

thank you!! :-)

1

Also - Garth Nix was a staple of my childhood fantasy, especially Sabriel and the Abhorsen series when i got a little older

You might also consider the Cirque du Freak series by Darren Shan

2

thank you!! :-)

1

I would suggest The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander, they're really good high fantasy with a lot of Welsh folklore tied in. the disney movie The Black Cauldron was based on these books and in my opinion, they both need love

also the Tiffany Aching series by Sir Terry Pratchett, it's more YA than the rest of Discworld and is such solid fantasy

2

thanks!! :-)

1

ooh and!!! the Eragon series is probably for a bit older middle school kids but, I'd put them in the list still
