Finally some good fucking worldbuilding

SFF with worldbuilding that informs the plot, prose, characters, and underlying narrative in deeply meaningful, intentional, and complex ways, so much so that changing the world means changing the shape of the story itself. Or: worldbuilding that goes beyond simple set dressing and becomes a vehicle for the story and narrative. Always open to recs and suggestions! ❤️

GOOD FOOD INCOMING

(all books personally read and approved by me, including full universe/series where applicable. Older SFF is included. For all of these books, I think the world-building is intricately woven with the plot in such a way that without the world, the plot wouldn't work. I'm so sorry for recommending so many but SFF is just so rich 😌 these are like, top reads of my lifetime, so literally any pick off this list is complete gold to me)

🔹Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold 🔹Kushiel's Dart (#1 of three trilogies called Kushiel's Legacy) by Jacqueline Carey 🔹The Buried and the Bound (#1 in The Buried and the Bound trilogy) by Rochelle Hassan 🔹Winter's Orbit (#1 of Winter's Orbit duology) by Everina Maxwell 🔹Flesh and Spirit (#1 of The Lighthouse Duet) by Carol Berg 🔹Transformation (#1 of The Rai-Kirah trilogy) by Carol Berg 🔹A Plague of Angels by Sheri S. Tepper 🔹Arrows of the Queen (#1 in Heralds of Valdemar trilogy, spawning the Valdemar universe of 49 works and counting) by Mercedes Lackey 🔹A Memory Called Empire (#1 in Teixcalaan duology) by Arkady Martine 🔹Shards of Honor by Lois McMaster Bujold (#1 of 16 in the Miles Vorkosigan universe) 🔹The Genesis of Misery by Neon Yang 🔹Dread Nation duology by Justina Ireland 🔹Ring Shout by P. Djèlí Clark 🔹Neuromancer by William Gibson 🔹Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson 🔹Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie 🔹Dawn (#1 of the Xenogenesis trilogy) by Octavia Butler

Reference is a 10/10 👌 I saw the title and was ready to scream TWoV with my whole chest, but I saw that you already included it. I should have never doubted you 🙂‍↕️

2

I’ve read 20 pages and I already know it belongs!!!!! 💯💯💯

Absolute banger list thank you so much omg!!

Ahhhh yay! So glad you enjoy! 💗

Yet another incredible list 🤩 The description has me moving so many of these further up the TBR!

I’m really enjoying the worldbuilding in Dawnhounds. The world is unlike anything else I’ve ever read. You know how some “diverse” fantasy is just the same-old in a slightly different font (sometimes literally just the font on the cover, ig)? This is absolutely not that. Though the world elements feel extremely plot-relevant right now, I also have absolutely no idea where this plot is going—really just hoping she sticks the landing! (I can try to check back in when I finish, I’m just worried I’ll forget so commenting now)

I also recommend Radiance by Catherynne M. Valente. The individual elements are maybe a bit more familiar, but it’s all combined in a unique way. And it’s intertwined with the story and the writing in a way that’s super immersive and cohesive.

WOWOWOW dawnhounds sounds absolutely amazing?? Immediately added and also added to the TBR! I’ve loved all the bits and pieces of Catherynne Valente I’ve read so far, can’t wait to get to radiance as well!! Added, tysm! ❤️❤️❤️
