Finally some good fucking worldbuilding

SFF with worldbuilding that informs the plot, prose, characters, and underlying narrative in deeply meaningful, intentional, and complex ways, so much so that changing the world means changing the shape of the story itself. Or: worldbuilding that goes beyond simple set dressing and becomes a vehicle for the story and narrative. Always open to recs and suggestions! ❤️

BIG FAN of this! I would suggest Children of Blood and Bone! I can’t even begin to describe how immersive and beautiful and effective the worldbuilding was in it

It’s SUCH an amazing book 💯💯💯

2

(tears in eyes) thank you for including Animorphs on here, it fundamentally shaped me as a person. SFF is my genre so let me think a bit on some real excellence in world-building for you. I'm coming back with some good food please hold

GOOD FOOD INCOMING

(all books personally read and approved by me, including full universe/series where applicable. Older SFF is included. For all of these books, I think the world-building is intricately woven with the plot in such a way that without the world, the plot wouldn't work. I'm so sorry for recommending so many but SFF is just so rich 😌 these are like, top reads of my lifetime, so literally any pick off this list is complete gold to me)

🔹Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold 🔹Kushiel's Dart (#1 of three trilogies called Kushiel's Legacy) by Jacqueline Carey 🔹The Buried and the Bound (#1 in The Buried and the Bound trilogy) by Rochelle Hassan 🔹Winter's Orbit (#1 of Winter's Orbit duology) by Everina Maxwell 🔹Flesh and Spirit (#1 of The Lighthouse Duet) by Carol Berg 🔹Transformation (#1 of The Rai-Kirah trilogy) by Carol Berg 🔹A Plague of Angels by Sheri S. Tepper 🔹Arrows of the Queen (#1 in Heralds of Valdemar trilogy, spawning the Valdemar universe of 49 works and counting) by Mercedes Lackey 🔹A Memory Called Empire (#1 in Teixcalaan duology) by Arkady Martine 🔹Shards of Honor by Lois McMaster Bujold (#1 of 16 in the Miles Vorkosigan universe) 🔹The Genesis of Misery by Neon Yang 🔹Dread Nation duology by Justina Ireland 🔹Ring Shout by P. Djèlí Clark 🔹Neuromancer by William Gibson 🔹Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson 🔹Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie 🔹Dawn (#1 of the Xenogenesis trilogy) by Octavia Butler

SERVING UP A WHOLE FEAST OKAYYYYYY i'm so excited to check these out, thank you! a lot of them are already on my tbr too!

3

I feel like our tastes are pretty similar for some reason, so I'm very optimistic that you'll love literally any book you pick off this list ☺️ i can't wait to hear what you think about any of them honestly! Sounds like it's time to move some books up the TBR perhaps...😏

2

Yea, based on the books you commented i think so too! :D i also haven't been good about keeping up with sci-fi so it's great to get some recs from that space, a lot of my recent reading has been fantasy lol

I have The Curse of Chalion in suspended hold limbo on Libby right now, once i finish my ARC and the summer readalong book i'll have to lock in for sureeee

2

If I spot when you start reading, I'll read along with you - i wonder if the forum is empty? Cause that'll change 😌

HECK YEAH it takes me a long time to get through one book, so we'll have plenty of time to populate/add stuff to that forum methinks

2

Simply pointing out every time Curse of Chalion is a masterclass of writing craft in action will keep me occupied, let alone if I point out every time I screamed died cried or came back to life 🤭

2

Go off, queen. This list is amazing!

4

💖💖💖 ahh- thank you so much!!!

2

LEVIATHAN ON HERE YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

3

I can’t remember how much of it I’ve read but I just remember loving that shit frrrrr

1

no FR like alt history thats NOT wwii and actually has insanely well thought-out worldbuilding that isn’t just entirely eurocentric my beloved

2

love!!! this list is definitely needed lmfao

Ty!!! 💖 I swear I need to stop putting off my review for midet midpress because I keep stewing angrily about it, but at least this list is a more productive result of said stewing LMAO

2

valid!! and i'm definitely not complaining about another list from you haha

2

i always trust your taste and am so excited to have something geared towards it to find new reads from :’)) ty for all you do for our community ayz 🫶🏼

3

Wait Sophia please you’re too nice I’m 😭❤️ thank you soooo much ahhh! 🫶💕

3

Reference is a 10/10 👌 I saw the title and was ready to scream TWoV with my whole chest, but I saw that you already included it. I should have never doubted you 🙂‍↕️

2

I’ve read 20 pages and I already know it belongs!!!!! 💯💯💯

2

Absolute banger list thank you so much omg!!

2

Ahhhh yay! So glad you enjoy! 💗

2

Yet another incredible list 🤩 The description has me moving so many of these further up the TBR!

I’m really enjoying the worldbuilding in Dawnhounds. The world is unlike anything else I’ve ever read. You know how some “diverse” fantasy is just the same-old in a slightly different font (sometimes literally just the font on the cover, ig)? This is absolutely not that. Though the world elements feel extremely plot-relevant right now, I also have absolutely no idea where this plot is going—really just hoping she sticks the landing! (I can try to check back in when I finish, I’m just worried I’ll forget so commenting now)

I also recommend Radiance by Catherynne M. Valente. The individual elements are maybe a bit more familiar, but it’s all combined in a unique way. And it’s intertwined with the story and the writing in a way that’s super immersive and cohesive.

2

WOWOWOW dawnhounds sounds absolutely amazing?? Immediately added and also added to the TBR! I’ve loved all the bits and pieces of Catherynne Valente I’ve read so far, can’t wait to get to radiance as well!! Added, tysm! ❤️❤️❤️

2

Yes yes yes. So many good books on this list!

ahhhh yay woohoo! so glad you approve!

1

so glad to see uglies is on here lol

2

lollll yeah i might do a little write-up at some point but i think a lot of people conflate good worldbuilding with detailed worldbuilding when i think the best worldbuilding is the stuff that is detailed with intention because it's used to reinforce the story, such as with the Uglies series (and i think a lot of the good MG/YA stuff hits those points really well because by nature of the younger audience the author has to make sure not to have the worldbuilding be too unwieldy, which necessitates that they are even more careful/intentional with what they include!)

2

yess exactly!! good worldbuilding is when if you take it out, the story no longer makes sense. you also make a good point about mg/ya

2

Is saving the list equivalent of yoinking? Cos I am DOING THAT.

2

YAYAYAYAY so glad to hear that you like this! save/yoink away! ❤️🎉

2

this list is so important!! i might…have to rearrange my May/June plans 😅

2

🫡🫡 glad to be of service!

1

Also this is a younger book (middle grade) but Aru Shah is about Indian mythology and the worldbuilding is SO fun!! Pretty much all of the books under the Rick Riordan Presents imprint are really good at that

2

Chokshi’s other books are on my TBR, I didn’t realize she had a MG one too! It sounds so lovely 🥰

1

Great list! Some additional recs (first book of each):

  • The Last Wish (The Witcher series)
  • Foundation (Foundation series)
  • Consider Phlebas (The Culture series)
  • Storm Front (The Dresden Files series)
  • The Blade Itself (First Law trilogy)
  • Priory of the Orange Tree
  • The Color of Magic (Discworld series)
2

yayayay thank you for these :]! i will check them out!

2

Ohh, I love this! 🤩 May I suggest the Roots of Chaos series by Samantha Shannon? The Priory of the Orange Tree is the first one in the series going by publication order

1

oh i've heard such good things about that one! added, thank you for the rec!

2

No problem, I hope you'll love it if you get around to reading it! I'm doing a reread of the whole series throughout his year in chronological order hehe 🤭

2

The Winged Game. Don’t normally go for sports books but a cozy sports romantasy 👀👀👀 Witty banter, explaining the game in a way that also made me feel like an expert even.

1

Thank you for the suggestion! I’ll take a look :]
