This would be such a fun quest! If you had to pare it down, what would be the top 5 of your picks?
So I am NOT the only one who thought that Emily from Emily Wilde is autistic coded??? I was so upset when I saw people on the internet completely hating on her and I was like: Guys, stop, don't make me feel so unloved x_x
Sorry :D

i felt like this with convenience store woman! there’s so many blurbs and reviews about how hilarious it is and how the main character is an absolute riot… and she’s really just living her life as an autistic woman
Emily Wilde is my favorite character for this reason!! Her and Katniss from The Hunger Games are such great depictions of the way my autistic traits work
Same!
Katniss Everdeen? Huh. Wouldn't have expected that. I did read The Hunger Games back in 2012, before I had read much about Autism, so may not have realized anything was amiss, but then again, I often miss subtle stuff if I'm not actively looking for it.
What about Katniss indicated Autism traits, I wonder. Do you happen to remember an example or two that you'd be willing to share here?
Edit: I'll google it; you shouldn't have to put in the labor when I can.
Oh, I'm happy to chat about it ☺️! In case you didn't find the time to research yet: I think most base the theory on Katniss' communication troubles, and especially how she seems unable to interpret other people's reactions and emotions towards her. Her emotional expression also seems a bit limited to me. I think she also engages in self-regulating actions that could be considered stimming, and she is really good at the things she's interested in, and terrible at everything else (maybe restricted interest?). I would say you could also find some sensory issued, but it's hard to distinguish from the general overwhelm she feels in the capitol.
That's the things I can think of right now, and of course it's just a theory, or things people felt themselves seen in, you know? Of course in Katniss' case you would have to account for the "living under extreme condition" thing that would change how autistic people express themselves, but yeah ... 😊
My TBR is about to bow under the weight of all of these books omg
I felt really validated to see The Tainted Cup on here, there’s a chance your talking about Anna (I always thought adhd or audhd for her because of how excited she gets about novelty) and I’m going to look like an idiot but Den is one of my favorite autistic coded characters because he’s one of the first ones I could found myself relating to on a really deep level. And I read this while I was getting diagnosed so I felt like I was going through all the same things.
Found this list via the list section of No Longer Human.
I'm glad other people agree with my thinking.

i haven’t read it yet but i’ve heard that i’d probably resonate with it a lot!
It's a good read, and I understand why it's an important piece of post-WWII literature in Japan, but be prepared to think that the MC is a dick, haha.
I resonated with many aspects of him, and many others made me go "Oh yikes, what a dick" so it's a bit of a mixed bag xD
I knew I would love cleat cute as a sapphic who played soccer growing up but then the neurodivergence came out and oh boy! I ended up full blown sobbing I felt so seen.
If you may offer up a manga recommendation: ✨️ Delicious in Dungeon ✨️

of course!! i've added vol. 1 but just let me know if that's not the most accurate starting point, i know mangas can get a bit funky with ordering sometimes
The MC from Sky Daddy (iconic Linda) is so autistic coded, I love her so much

oh my god really? ahaha it was on my timeline so much yesterday, maybe this is a sign for me to read it
You musssst!! You would make the best posts, I swear!!!! And it’s so good, like actually so good lol I thought it was a object smut but noup, it’s a whole novel, and I’m having the time of my life reading it🙂↕️

I DID THE SAME THING, i was like “oh haha plane smut” 😏 judging a book by its cover, rookie mistake
Rip to my tbr - I love this list!

aw thank you so much ☺️ i’m glad you’re finding it helpful
you know, I never thought of Dungeon Meshi (delicious in dungeon) as autistic coded, but now that I think about it, it absolutely makes sense. Especially with Senshi and Laios ... okay maybe also Marcille and Falin. yeah, yeah ... it absolutely deserves to be on here
rust vance from clown in a cornfield is my current emotional support "this guy is so autistic coded" character

omg fun, thank you for the rec! i feel like autistic characters in horror is an untapped market 🤔
every horror character will be autistic when i'm through with them 🫡
I'd recommend House Rules by Jodi Picoult to be added here :>
My Favourite book with an autistic MC is A Room Called Earth by Madeleine Ryan

that book's a perfect fit, thank you so much!!
I piggybacked here from BlueWaterLily's post and dang! This is a good list. 🤌 Bless.

thank you kindly! i’m glad to be of service to our community 🫡
Rose from Camp Damascus by Chuck Tingle is explicitly stated to be autistic!

perfect, i've added your rec! thank you so much
I would recommend Anita Kelly’s Something Wild and Wonderful

thank you for the rec, harper 🤗 i appreciate it
What a fantastic list! Recommending Kay Kerr’s books - she has just released her adult debut called Might Cry Later.

oh that sounds great! i’ve added might cry later, feel free to let me know if any of her other fiction books would fit too 🙂↕️
Good list as always, kora! The protagonist from Mary: An Awakening of Terror by Nat Cassidy is also quite autistic-coded!

awww thanks skye!! 💜 definitely interested in that one, i loved when the wolf comes home by that author
Recommending The Outside by Ada Hoffman -- multiple canon autistic characters. They also have a new book coming out this year (2026) that I'm pretty sure has autistic rep

fiona thank you, that’s a great addition!
I’m suprised Normal People isn’t on here. That said I reccomend The Remaking of Corbin Wale by Roan Parrish oh I think Roan Parrish’s other book too…uh….Better Than People.

thanks for the recs! i've actually read normal people and in hindsight, i can see why marianne might be relatable for autistic people for sure
It’s actually the only reason I read it. My mom watched the movie/tv show and told me it was heavy on the autistic/neurodiverse-coding and so I went fiiiiiiiiine I’ll read a straight romance for once, thanks mom. Frankly I think both characters have their own autistic-coding.
I love this list! Highly suggest checking out Chloe Liese - she is an autistic romance author who has several autistic characters 💗 if you want a female lead specifically, I’d check out: Always Only You or If Only You - books 2 and 6 of an interconnected standalone series but can be read on their own (I liked the latter better and I think that seems to be the general consensus), Two Wrongs Make a Right, and The Mistletoe Motive

appreciate the romance recs!! thank you so much
Beckett from In The Weeds (Lovelight #2) by B.K. Borison was a wonderful book and while not explicitly stated he for sure is on the spectrum.

great rec, thank you!!
Rec:
I think the MC of The Princess Knight is so autistic coded! The whole book is inspired by Legally Blonde and many people headcanon Elle Woods as autistic ☺️

ooh fun, thanks grim! that book has been on my radar for a while now, maybe this is a sign for me to get to it 👀
Recommendation:
Read it a few days ago . Totally autistic.

added!
Not seeing Walking Practice on here. That’s a more recent one for me.

oh i’ve seen walking practice around, looks like an interesting one! thanks!!
Of course! The audiobook is SO good and SO vital in my opinion. But the book also have visual text formatting stuff that matters, just a heads up!
Just a note, this comment popped up on my feed randomly, and all of a sudden I'm obsessed with this list! So thank you for that. 😁

aw that's fantastic, i'm so glad it found its way to you 🥰
Submitting with great esteem The Owl Was A Baker's Daughter by Grace Tiffany

thank you, it's been added in! looks like a great follow-up for hamnet lovers
i just reread We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson and discovered MC is so so autistic-coded

oh interesting, i’ve seen that one around a lot! thank you for the rec 💜
I nominate Key Lime Sky by Al Hess! 🛸

ooh a combo of autism and nonbinary rep, amazing!! thank you so much
I think The Raven Scholar would fit really well in this, I think everyone agrees that Neema is autistic. I also read Ruston Vance from the Clown in a Cornfield series as autistic, but he‘s not the main character so I‘m not sure how well those books would fit into this list

ahh the raven scholar seems so up my alley, i need to get to it 🙂↕️ thank you!!
(oh and clown in a cornfield was also recommended by the lovely @cowboyemoji so i trust your judgements!)
Love at first flight by Jo Watson is definitely giving FMC with autism , only 20% through though so maybe they’ll say for sure later that she has it

aww cute name! thank you for the rec billie 🫶
I’m suprised Normal People isn’t on here. That said I reccomend The Remaking of Corbin Wale by Roan Parrish
the long way to a small angry planet being on here is sooooo real. everyone on that damn ship is neurodivergent in some way!!! 😭😭😭 this list single-handedly making my tbr a length previously unknown to mankind
Madison Square Murders, bk 1 CS Poe
