Any of the witches Discworld books would fit, especially lords and ladies by Terry Pratchett because both elderly witches find boyfriends there. đŸ„č (However it cannot be read without reading previous witches books)

2

Is there a book that would make a reasonably good entry point without reading the rest of discworld but still get the sweet old grumps?

1

Equal rites is the first book in the series and a good entry point.

2

Is anyone here watching A Man on the Inside? It's got the same vibes as these books!

21

Omg 95% on rotten tomatoes! Going to watch right now 😂

3

I'd say the only thing it's missing is grumpiness from the MC but fear not there is definitely grumpiness amongst some of the other characters

6

btw i loved this show & can't wait for season 2

4

Omg yessss I'm so glad!

2

I loved the show!!!!

2

Yes!! Loved it - can’t wait for the new season!

2

Oh that's Sam Malone! I will look for this show. Thank you for the recommendation.

Diane Chambers from Cheers is one of my favourite characters. She is always reading a book 📖

2

I haven't watched Cheers! I'll have to check it out

2

I love the show!

2

This just reminded me to check and I realized I never watched season 2.... Omw to do that immediately

2

Oops same

2

im watching it right now!!!

2

I will watch anything with Ted Danson and by Mike Schur

3

OMG TOTALLY!!! i binged it not long ago and it was such a lovely show. very excited for the second season because it's so nice and lighthearted <3

3

Remarkably Bright Creatures was one of my favorites reads of 2023

10

I loveee this book, the audiobook version is also so good!

4

Yes, totally agree! I was sceptical about it when starting but Marcellus has my heart!

3

What a great list. The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce would be a great addition. Jim Broadbent read the audiobook - just perfect.

5

Thanks for the rec, added!

2

I just read How to Age Disgracefully and it embodies the name of this list!

5

Oooh I haven't heard of that, this list is for fiction but it's good to know there are actually nonfiction options on the same topic!

It’s actually fiction! A very cozy read that takes place in the UK and follows a rag tag group of older folks!

Wait, who is it by? I think I must have looked up the wrong book!!

2

It’s by Clare Pooley!

2

I highly recommend The Borrowed Life of Fredrik Fife by Anna Johnston 💖

4

Wait I'm obsessed by the fact he's stepping in for a grump, what a twist! This is a perfect suggestion for this list

1

My partner loves these types of books, and another favorite of his is The 100 Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared. It's a fun, ridiculous sort of read - he definitely goes on an adventure!

4

Ahhhh looks like a phenomenal rec, adding now!! And hopefully your partner might enjoy some of the others here :)

2

I'm trying to get him to read some books with me so I'm very grateful for this list 💕

2

I’d recommend “Welcome to the Hyunam-Dong Bookshop” for this vibe as well!

4

I've definitely had that on my TBR a minute, is the MC actually old? Somehow I got the impression from the blurb that she was on the younger side

1

The MC is in her 40s(?) maybe- so no, but there are some older characters that are heavily featured that add to the familial vibe.

1

I love this haha, I feel like The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches would fit if you're interested!

3

I looove that book and it definitely has the found family aspect, but I think Mika doesn't quite fit the old+grumpy bill for this particular list. Appreciate the rec though and definitely let me know if you come across any others!!

4

True true I was thinking of all the adults in the book not just Mika haha

2

Under the Whispering Door was one of my favorite books last year!

3

Have you read House in the Cerulean Sea? I read that one first and felt like Whispering Door was so similar that I didn’t end up enjoying it as much as I had hoped :( just curious if anyone has had the opposite experience starting with Whispering Door and finding Cerulean Sea to not hit the spot đŸ€Ł

1

Interesting! I read Under the Whispering Door first and loved it. I didn’t enjoy House in the Cerlulean Sea quite as much.

1

My going theory is that his books have such a similar vibe that what ever a person reads first will be their favorite! But don’t have quite enough samples to confirm yet

1

I think Brit marie was here by Fredrik backman would fit this list!

3

That looks so good and I adored a man called Ove, added!!

2

Thank you so so much for this list !! It is exactly what I didn’t know I was looking đŸ„ł

3

Ahhh I'm glad you love it, it's my whole heart haha

2

Vera Wong was sooo good! I appreciated that I could get mad at Vera without starting to dislike her - just like a real friend.

3

I love that one so much! The sequel didn't hit quite as well, but the first will be a forever favorite

2

I agree with this. I got a bit bored with the sequel and paused it.

2

Great list! Good Morning, Midnight by Lily Brooks-Dalton might fit in nicely with this theme.

3

Thanks for the rec!! I added it! I don't think there's another one on the list with this science backdrop

3

Yay!!!

2

Do the old people in question have to be grumpy to qualify? Or can they be just old and sweet?

3

Ideally both old and grumpy :) I'd hear an old and sweet pitch if there is grumpiness somewhere else hahaha

3

Eddie Winston is looking for love He is a sweet 90yo man. But he has a young goth sidekick, who can be grumpy at times. And there’s also a guineapig that bites when he’s picked up, which I suppose is quite grumpy. You don’t have to add it if you don’t feel like it fits. I just have been thinking about your old people list throughout the entire read.

3

Ooohhhh I want to read it therefore I will add it bc this is barbies dreamhouse and I make the rules hahahah thank you!!!

2

I just finished it, and it was such a cute book. Really recommend for a light, but also somehow deep, read

3

I’d also add How to Age Disgracefully or Iona Iverson’s Rules for Commuting (both bby Clare Pooley) to fit this genre!

3

Added both!!! The more the merrier when it comes to grumpy old folks

3

I'm reading The Last List of Mabel Beaumont right now, and it totally fits this vibe!

2

Omg thank you for the rec, adding to this list and my tbr đŸ«¶

1

Had a great time with Vera Wong! Waiting for the sequel!!

2

Me too!!

2

You're missing the Thursday crime club about the retirement home oldies solving crimes.

2

Thanks for the rec, added to the list and my tbr :)

2

The Housekeeper and the Professor by Yƍko Ogawa would be perfect for this list. What do you think?

2

I haven't read it but I'll take your word for it! Added!

1

This is such a lovely list! Frank and Red would definitely be perfect for it if you’re interested?

2

Awesome, thank you!

2

Would also recommend The Universe versus Alex Woods by Gavin Extence for this list!

2

Thanks!!

2

you should check out The Brilliant Life of Eudora Honeysett, I haven't quite finished it yet, but it seems to fit this and is so charming đŸ„č

2

It looks perfect!! Thank you!

2

you are so welcome!!!

1

I would definitely add The Elegance of the Hedgehog to this list! :)

2

This looks perfect, thank you!!

2

you could look into How to Read A Book by monica wood! it’s three person POV & it’s a retired teacher who has a book club at a woman’s prison, a retired factory worker, & a woman in the prison. wholesome found family & second chances book!

2

Omg, I already had this on my TBR and didn't even realize it !

2

Submitting The Road to Tender Hearts for Consideration đŸ«Ą There’s a grumpy old man, a cross country roadtrip, a (literal) found family , and most importantly a cute cat 🐈 ❀

2

PERFECT thank you

2

Recently discovered The Thursday Murder Club, and LOVING it. This is such a cute list idea!

2

Ahhh I'm glad you like it, I haven't read that one just yet, it comes so highly recommended but the show didn't quite jive with me 😬 Have you watched?

3

I actually decided to skip the adaptation and go straight for the books because everyone I knew who loved the books was very disappointed by the Netflix adaptation. Apparently they made quite a few changes for the worst. So I can't speak to the adaptation, but that's why I ended up passing it. The books are very snappy reads with quick wit, multi-layered murder/crime mystery vibes, lots of humour and lots of heart. For me, a great combo!

2

Ok ok I only got about 30min into the show so this gives me hope for the books again

2

I'd definitely recommend giving them a try if murder mystery, investigation, and old people found family vibes are for you.

2

The book just has a really big cast of characters with a lot going on for each of them (in the plot and emotionally) so I didn’t really go into the movie expecting them to nail it (they definitely didn’t) but I think it’s a good time in its own right! Just not really a toooon of overlap with the book other than the broad strokes and character names đŸ€·đŸœâ€â™€ïž

I know that she doesn't actually fit the criteria, but special shout out to El from Naomi Novak's Scholomance Series.

Endearingly grumpy [teenager, with the air and attitude of an] old person with their found family. ❀

2

Hahaha yes but alas, she found her family too early in life to qualify. Suffer longer next time girl!

3

Fabulous little list!

2

Thank you!!!

2

Love this list! Cant wait to read the ones I haven yet

2

Hahaha me too honestly, so many good recommendations from other folks!

2

Seema👋 did you read An Elderly Lady Is Up to No Good by Helene Tursten? ☠

2

No!!! I'll add it!

1

it's not so much a recommendation because I haven't read it myself (it's on my TBR, tho), but I think Sipsworth by Simon Van Booy might fit in here.

2

This sounds perfect!!

1

Veronica and her penguins will forever be in my heart 🐧💙

2

No judgment, but my bookclubs have chosen so many of these that I'm trying to never read another one, so this'll be a list to avoid for me!

2

HAHAHA maybe I need to join your bookclub

2

The Secret Collector by Abigail Johnson would probably fit here 🙂

2

Looks perfect!!! Thank you!!

1

The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi would fit this list perfectly. I won't say they all are old but they are oldER characters and definitely grumps.

2

Okay older and grumpy I will take!! Thanks!

1

I think "The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper" would work here. One of my favorite books :)

2

Incredibleeee thank you !!

1

i think one of the characters in cascade failure (and the second book gravity lost) would fall into this category for sure!

1

This list is intended to capture books where that is the primary focus of the story, would you say that's the case for cascade failure or is it more a side character?

1

it’s like a found family story with 5 POVs (one is this character) but it’s clear from all POVs that this character is kind of a caring grump—if that makes sense?

2

Okay cool thanks for clarifying! I'm sure this is a lovely book, I think the old grump being only 1/5 MCs makes it just a smidge outside the focus of this list đŸ«¶

2

If you like this style, you will love Blue Sky Joe by Marie-Renée Lavoie, it's French Canadian and set in Québec city in the 1980-1990's

1

Hmmm is there an English translation? I'm not seeing it come up when I search here or on goodreads

1

Just realized they only made an English version of the movie and not the book đŸ˜©

2

Booo!!
