Hi everyone! I did not realize so many people had requested the lobster book here until 2 hours ago. I've read people's comments, but I'm sorry if I missed anything while gathering my thoughts and writing them out.Â
I did not intend to get Lobster on the most discussed list, earn points from the book, or gain followers. I do not care about clout or anything to do with that kind of internet presence. One of the people I follow posted a review of the book, I became intrigued, and started reading it. I spent two days after I finished the book, for pure fun, responding with silly gifs whenever someone added the book to their interested/tbr folder. The joke turned into it being my evil plan and that I'm the leader of the cult. During that time period, I also commented on the book outside people's update cards (I think there are 3-4 separate moments). I obviously shouldn't have done that, and I'm sorry. I didn't intend to pressure anyone; I wanted to share a funky and absurdist book. But it doesn't matter what the intent was when people are feeling pressured to read a book they wouldn't normally pick up. I have either edited (leaving the original text unchanged) or deleted those comments. For other readers who are doing that, I'm assuming a positive intent that the people they're encouraging are their friends or people with whom they have some sort of rapport. I do not investigate every single interaction, as that's insane and also impossible.Â
This was meant to be fun, yet it seems to be ruining people's experience on this app (both readers and non-readers). I didn't anticipate the book being on the most-discussed page, added to a list, or accused of being the reason anyone would farm for points. I just liked the book, enjoyed interacting with people on the forum, and wanted everyone who gave it a shot to feel welcome. I've obviously stopped being super active in the book's forum to help reduce its "growth." But it's gotten to a point where even if I'm not super active, the book is still being talked about, and I don't have control over that. I did not ask anyone to make posts about it on the club forum or to continue commenting about it. Quite frankly, it looks like people are having some fun with an inside joke about it being an evil plan/cult. Perhaps because there are lots of inside jokes about it being an evil plan, lobster level, the use of the word cult, and sarcastic messages about peer pressure, the community is continuously perceived with ill intent.Â
To @notbillnye, I'm sorry that so many people have asked for that book to be added to this list. It looks like it's been a stressful decision for you, and you're free to do whatever you'd like. I'm sorry for making your experience here like this. And to everyone who's had a bad interaction or gotten a bad vibe from the people reading the book, I'm also sorry.
Regarding whether it was organic or inorganic growth, I can see both sides. Perhaps we can agree that the way I handled the book the first two days after reading it was more inorganic, while everyone else's approach has been more organic. And I hope people interacting with this book in a fun and whimsical way don't get downvoted. I don't want to start an argument about this book. I encourage everyone to try to see these interactions with positive intent until the excitement around this book naturally dies down. There are no sides here and I don't want people "defending" Lobster. If you are a Lobster reader, I ask that you engage with it the same way you would with any other book.
It does suck to be accused of spreading this book for some ulterior motive, but I'll live. But if my presence here, reading and discussing funky books, is truly messing with your enjoyment of this platform, I do not mind being blocked. Please do whatever you need to do to make pagebound the community you wish to be a part of.

I second this. Every time I saw it I thought the âcultâ or âevil planâ was a fun inside joke. I definitely felt like âoh I want to hang out with the cool kidsâ but thatâs how other PB lore type posts have been too so I donât see the harm but maybe thatâs just me đ€·đŒââïž

I have accidentally started quite a few chain watches and reads before. Itâs surprisingly easier than one can sometimes think when youre just behaving organically and having fun. Iâm sorry the situation somehow seems to have caused stress and animosity? But dont be sorry for having a fun time with a story and others.
well all fandoms are a bit like a cult aren't they? I think we were all having a lot of fun and whoever wasn't impressed with the book can always mute it or/and block you or anyone who was too annoying for their taste đ€·ââïž Your enthusiasm actually enhanced reading experience at least for me đ
i agree. i know iâve made several jokes with you and my mutuals about lobster, points, and all that i understand can come off as me being serious to others when thatâs not how i intended it. i hope no one felt bothered or pressured due to those. it was all meant to be in good fun, but understand if people thought it got way out of hand. đ«¶đŒ
Iâm just gonna chime in here real quick to say that I donât think there is any harm in commenting/gifing on cards related to books youâre excited about. I did this with the flamingo book. I was excited to see it get popular after I recommended it for a list add. I popped over to the book feed a few times and engaged with people who were interacting with the book. Why is there a book feed, that is interactive, if J + L didnât intend for us to use it to engage with other boundlings reading the same book? Even with the provided screenshot above it doesnât feel like someone planned to deviously gain points, it was a result of the circumstances for sure. I enjoyed all my interactions with everyone in the Lobster experience and it will always be one of my favorite times on PB.
Also, I still support @notbillnye not adding a book and Iâm not trying to engage them in discourse about it. This is meant in kindness.

hi yes, i've seen Lobster and this is no shade to you, but since you're the fifth person who's suggested the book, i want to explain my hesitancy that's going to sound haterade so my apologies to you directly.
this is a silly list but something i know a lot of PB users genuinely respect bc it embodies the "word of mouth", the TBR train, the "yoink" or whatever behavior that is PB. this is a list that shows organic interest over a long period of time bc we see our friends read it, their friends read it, and so forth. not people randomly commenting on others activity cards about something lobster nor gaining 2000 points in one forum. it's clear that there is a movement to get the most diabolically weird book on the Most Discussed and on this list in a very performative way, and that does not embody PB to me nor the purpose of this list. I will not promote clout or point farming behavior. I want this list to preserve the genuine cultural zeitgeist energy that PB has and we all love. this is no disrespect to those that have read the book, those interested, etc., it's not even about the book, it's the energy around it that i'm not a fan of and i will reject for future books that show the same behavior.
also, iâm very unclear on how you arrived at someone farming 2000 points in the (iâm assuming) Lobster forum??? at 5 points per post/comment, even with a very generous 10 upvotes (which most of the comments have not reached), an individual user would have to have made 133(!?!) comments to get to 2000 points. which hasnât happened, as far as i can see.

i totally get not adding a book that you feel took off in an âinorganicâ way but as someone who has participated in reading some of these âdiabolically weirdâ books that end up on most discussed - at least for me personally it has nothing to do with clout or performance. itâs about reading something totally unhinged and discussing it with friends. without pagebound and the forums, i never would have discovered that i like reading just the most bizarre books available and i consider having the opportunity to discuss them with others to be a gift and a privilege. and something i would never have the chance to do irl.
I agree with you @alexz. Also to @notbillnye total support of not adding a book for whatever reason any list maker chooses. I read Lobster with the surge on PB. Because it became accessible to me, finally. Itâs been on my ThriftBooks wishlist so long itâs at the bottom, thatâs years for me. I had no clue there were disingenuous motives behind a popular book and I wonder how that is determined? I donât know what to look for/avoid with clout chasing/point farming here on PB.
Thatâs where Iâm at. Whereâs the line that determines what makes something point farming or an organic trend? Whose job is it to decide that anyway?
the list owner presumably. anyone is free to make their own pb lore list and include the books they want on it. if this list owner feels some activity disqualifies the book from their list thatâs their prerogative. ive personally seen people make claims that they can level up quicker by posting in the lobster forum and encouraging others to do so which feels pretty point farmy to me.

hi! i'm only sharing this particular example to answer your question, not to call out anyone or encourage some "point investigation" behavior, which is why names are crossed off. i do not want that, so i won't be engaging further to preserve a community space.
to reiterate my above comment, this is not about the diabolically weird bookâthere are two "weird" books on the listâor the people who read them, and i'm glad pagebound has been a place for you to make friends and discuss them! my rationale is solely the behavior surrounding the book and how people came to learn about it on pageound. i'm not debating or gatekeeping what's PB lore, there are books on this list i haven't read or tbr'd, and there are ones that others suggested, as per my pinned comment.
youâve said you wonât engage further and i, in no way, expect a response. youâve provided your concluding thoughts and i wish to share mine as well. to start, i fully support your decision not to include Lobster on your list despite its perceived popularity. i understand that youâve made certain observations that have coloured your view of Lobster in a negative light. i appreciate the example youâve provided of, iâm assuming two?, users discussing the âpoint-farmingâ potential of Lobster. despite the anecdotal experience of the user in this example, after looking through the Lobster forum and reviews, the 2000 point potential math still ainât mathing. but that is beside the point. iâm also thankful that i did not observe anything of this sort in the group of users i follow and engage with. however, i think itâs entirely unfair and also unfounded, to paint everyone who interacted with Lobster with this same brush. from my personal observations, excitement around reading and discussing the book was mostly, if not entirely, genuine. i observed a group of users getting excited about tbring and reading a strange French novella. and i say this as someone who (has tbred) not read Lobster and made to the best of my recollection a total of one comment in the Lobster forum. i think itâs unfair to suggest that readers are on some sort of mission to get âdiabolically weirdâ books on most discussed. as far as i can see, itâs a consequence, not a goal. and with respect to perceived âpoint-farmingâ what is the difference between being an active participant in the forum of a book like Lobster and being an active participant in the forum of one of the readalong books which have a much larger group of readers? intention to farm sure (which i believe is isolated to a small group), but beyond that this is a genuine question. i have taken this to heart, as a buddy reader of âweirdâ books and as someone who considers sharky a friend. i honestly donât care about this list, you can do as you choose with it. but i hope in the future, you will take some of this into consideration before making blanket statements about readers of a certain book.
Would Married to the Alien Cowboy by Ursa Dax qualify? I read it in December after I picked it from the Saddle Up, Sweetheart Quest. It wasn't a very populated forum then, but I feel like it's been steadily growing for the last few months, with more and more people joining. But maybe it doesn't fit a strict TBR train definition, idk đ€·ââïž I thought I'd still make the suggestion âșïž
They have been amazing experience for me at least đ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł i saw you read it, so i decided to give it a try, and let say I have only read alien romance ever since đ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł
It's full of positive vibes and I love seeing more and more people joining on the fun đ„° gotta love the alien cowboys đ€

I've legitimately made new friends because of this book! The story itself is so sweet and wholesome that it creates instant fans, and fosters a lot of goodwill between readers whenever pretty much any of us see it pop up in our feed from a new person! I've noticed there are multiple little groups of people that turn into one big group over the book so it would definitely fit the spirit of a list like this.
