so so honored to be included (and that everyone is reading Mad Sisters please read it it's so worth it)

46

Right! The TBR train is such a fun thing to see! I love trying to go back and figure out where one originates from

11

I just got it from Netgalley!! (because of this list)

2

yayay that's so exciting!! can't wait for your thoughts :)

3

I have given up on my library getting a copy and I have placed my order from the local bookstore đŸ«Ą

On the plan for December đŸ«¶đŸ»

7

must share the love in all spaces of PB 💖

9

mad sisters is one of the most beautiful gifts pb has given me 💛

3

me as well, it's a gift that never stops giving because every new person that reads it makes it 100x more meaningful đŸ„Č that book has my entire heart and soul

4

thank you for gifting it to us all!

2

Raise your hand if you feel personally targeted by this list 👋

30

we are all just looking into one large mirror

13

đŸ–ïž although I'm proud to only sometimes be peer pressured to read things

17

I’m proud to be easily peer pressured to read things đŸ™‚â€â†•ïž

8

I know about the tomato book (staying in neutral territory), but the others I have no idea đŸ€Ł

23

Saaaame, really hoping for a write up in this comments section. I wanna be included!

7

I still don't get the tomato controversy, but have chosen to remain mostly ignorant. I was here for it and just let it wash over me like water under a bridge haha.

11

(neutral territory is safest 😆)

Tortoise's Tale started a fairly large TBR train, notably @lucyPagebound was influenced

The Dance of Anger was the book @jennfierPagebound quoted for her Feminine Rage Side Quest

Mad Sisters of Esi is @crybabybea's holy, lovely text of a book that is going around :)

Silver Under Nightfall is the first book @Fantasy was horny vocal on main đŸ€

22

This almost makes me wish my first experience with Silver Under Nightfall was here so I could enjoy all the forum posts. I'll have to see if I can find a way to upload/host pictures of my annotations for my read of it. It's literally me writing "AHHHHH" but I got so excited it turned into a cluster of scribbles 😅

1

Hi everyone! I did not realize so many people had requested the lobster book here until 2 hours ago. I've read people's comments, but I'm sorry if I missed anything while gathering my thoughts and writing them out.

I did not intend to get Lobster on the most discussed list, earn points from the book, or gain followers. I do not care about clout or anything to do with that kind of internet presence. One of the people I follow posted a review of the book, I became intrigued, and started reading it. I spent two days after I finished the book, for pure fun, responding with silly gifs whenever someone added the book to their interested/tbr folder. The joke turned into it being my evil plan and that I'm the leader of the cult. During that time period, I also commented on the book outside people's update cards (I think there are 3-4 separate moments). I obviously shouldn't have done that, and I'm sorry. I didn't intend to pressure anyone; I wanted to share a funky and absurdist book. But it doesn't matter what the intent was when people are feeling pressured to read a book they wouldn't normally pick up. I have either edited (leaving the original text unchanged) or deleted those comments. For other readers who are doing that, I'm assuming a positive intent that the people they're encouraging are their friends or people with whom they have some sort of rapport. I do not investigate every single interaction, as that's insane and also impossible.

This was meant to be fun, yet it seems to be ruining people's experience on this app (both readers and non-readers). I didn't anticipate the book being on the most-discussed page, added to a list, or accused of being the reason anyone would farm for points. I just liked the book, enjoyed interacting with people on the forum, and wanted everyone who gave it a shot to feel welcome. I've obviously stopped being super active in the book's forum to help reduce its "growth."  But it's gotten to a point where even if I'm not super active, the book is still being talked about, and I don't have control over that. I did not ask anyone to make posts about it on the club forum or to continue commenting about it. Quite frankly, it looks like people are having some fun with an inside joke about it being an evil plan/cult. Perhaps because there are lots of inside jokes about it being an evil plan, lobster level, the use of the word cult, and sarcastic messages about peer pressure, the community is continuously perceived with ill intent.

To @notbillnye, I'm sorry that so many people have asked for that book to be added to this list. It looks like it's been a stressful decision for you, and you're free to do whatever you'd like. I'm sorry for making your experience here like this. And to everyone who's had a bad interaction or gotten a bad vibe from the people reading the book, I'm also sorry.

Regarding whether it was organic or inorganic growth, I can see both sides. Perhaps we can agree that the way I handled the book the first two days after reading it was more inorganic, while everyone else's approach has been more organic. And I hope people interacting with this book in a fun and whimsical way don't get downvoted. I don't want to start an argument about this book. I encourage everyone to try to see these interactions with positive intent until the excitement around this book naturally dies down. There are no sides here and I don't want people "defending" Lobster. If you are a Lobster reader, I ask that you engage with it the same way you would with any other book.

It does suck to be accused of spreading this book for some ulterior motive, but I'll live. But if my presence here, reading and discussing funky books, is truly messing with your enjoyment of this platform, I do not mind being blocked. Please do whatever you need to do to make pagebound the community you wish to be a part of.

23

I'm sorry some people got this impression? It has always looked like an innocent joke to me đŸ«‚

19

I second this. Every time I saw it I thought the “cult” or “evil plan” was a fun inside joke. I definitely felt like “oh I want to hang out with the cool kids” but that’s how other PB lore type posts have been too so I don’t see the harm but maybe that’s just me đŸ€·đŸŒâ€â™€ïž

20

Same! I can understand people may have been put off but it was evident to me that it was all in good fun đŸ«¶

6

I have accidentally started quite a few chain watches and reads before. It’s surprisingly easier than one can sometimes think when youre just behaving organically and having fun. I’m sorry the situation somehow seems to have caused stress and animosity? But dont be sorry for having a fun time with a story and others.

14

well all fandoms are a bit like a cult aren't they? I think we were all having a lot of fun and whoever wasn't impressed with the book can always mute it or/and block you or anyone who was too annoying for their taste đŸ€·â€â™€ïž Your enthusiasm actually enhanced reading experience at least for me 😄

12

i agree. i know i’ve made several jokes with you and my mutuals about lobster, points, and all that i understand can come off as me being serious to others when that’s not how i intended it. i hope no one felt bothered or pressured due to those. it was all meant to be in good fun, but understand if people thought it got way out of hand. đŸ«¶đŸŒ

18

I’m just gonna chime in here real quick to say that I don’t think there is any harm in commenting/gifing on cards related to books you’re excited about. I did this with the flamingo book. I was excited to see it get popular after I recommended it for a list add. I popped over to the book feed a few times and engaged with people who were interacting with the book. Why is there a book feed, that is interactive, if J + L didn’t intend for us to use it to engage with other boundlings reading the same book? Even with the provided screenshot above it doesn’t feel like someone planned to deviously gain points, it was a result of the circumstances for sure. I enjoyed all my interactions with everyone in the Lobster experience and it will always be one of my favorite times on PB.

Also, I still support @notbillnye not adding a book and I’m not trying to engage them in discourse about it. This is meant in kindness.

5

adds all to TBR

My Queen I have failed to read a single PB lore book, please forgive me I’m on my knees

20

does the sun set in the west? is the sky blue? is lotty perfect just the way she is? 😚

16

gotta capture the lore now đŸ«¶đŸŒ cannot wait to refer back to this in a year 😭😂

8

Omg who knows what will be the hot topics then!

5

we should place bets, like a new year resolution: “what book theme shall bring chaos to PB?”

8

And the winner will be something as normal as tomatoes 😂 (Also, after considering my position on tomatoes I have discovered I'm neutral. I shan't be eating one like an apple though)

5

a completely safe and reasonable stance đŸ«¶đŸŒ

7

Thank you for understanding đŸ™đŸŒ

5

this is so fun!! I’m so sat to see the PB lore grow and see what other books are added đŸ€

12

I‘m on vacation in a few weeks and I‘m planning on reading it then. It‘s my most anticipated book of the year 😂

Is this our versions of a booktok book?

9

i think so, but i cannot imagine jurassichrist or the tomato book going viral on tiktok 💀

9

What a fun list!! I also love that I’ve either read or have these on my TBR. Can tell I was influenced 💀

8

same... but i made the list so it would be weird not too đŸ€

7

I cannot wait to comprehend the lore đŸ€

8

I knew for a fact Mad Sisters of Esi would be on here 😂😂😂😂

8

HAD to give credit to the queen of the pyramid scheme 💖

7

💀💀 you're a real one you've been here since the beginning of that

8

we've all fallen prey to your genius ✚

5

Yeah, same. Came looking for it! I haven't read it yet, but that book has been stalking me and I think I need to give in because I think I'm going to love it... Plus, that cover? UFFFF

2

Perhaps I’m in a PB bubble, but Lobster by Guillaume Lecasble has recently been getting some traction around here, led by @sharky_97. Something to keep on eye on maybe! I know I’m reading it next month bc of the growing chatter around it :)

8

I was coming here to see if it might have been added! It's even on Most Discussed Yesterday 👀

11

Most Discussed Yesterday 😭🩞 maybe I do need to read it
do you think libraries all over the world will wonder why Lobster is suddenly being requested everywhere?

8

I often wonder about that, and sales as well. (And for readalongs too actually!) At some point they most notice these developments, right? đŸ€”

8

Speaking of readalongs
I kind of want a special event Lobster readalong now? I’m not even particularly interested in the book itself, but a real, not bug-related Lobster badge would be awesome! I hope Sharky’s cult can make it happen đŸ„°

4

Haha what an idea! 😄🩞🏅

3

Same 👀

8

I feel like sharky's sheer dedication to leading the cult of Lobster deserves recognition 🩞🧈🧂🙏

6

i am keeping my eye on it đŸ™‚â€â†•ïž i'm paying attention to organic longevity for pyramid scheme so i'll be watching

19

SO SO TRUE AND SO NEEDED

7

cheers to many more đŸ™‚â€â†•ïžđŸ˜œ

8

Midnight Timetable by Bora Chung was definitely a tbr-train pagebound rec for me (it has such an eye-catching cover). I unfortunately can’t remember exactly who I snatched it from, but I think it may have been either Polter or MadHoney? maybe someone else will know? It’s so fun that you’re collecting all of these!

7

Oh yay!! I will add, if we find who to credit (besides you for the rec!) I would love that :)

6

I definitely TBR'ed it early on but so did Mads, I think! I think you're the one who brought it everyone's attention tho. đŸ«¶đŸœ

2

This will definitely be an interesting list lol I can't wait to see what other books are gonna be added her.

(Does Kissing the Corona Virus count cause that book really affected me 😂)

7

Angie omg I must add it are you kidding !!

6

I actually still remember a quote so well it never leaves my head XD

5

I must admit I have never been this curious about tomatoes.

7

A statement echoed across PB

6

more people need to read the midnight timetable because its such a great book.

7

and hopefully this propaganda fun list with encourage them!!

3

Ahhh, of all the nasty little horror books that PB users could steal from me, it had to be Spread Me. Love and hate that that's the book I'm well known for.

7

I’ll definitely be taking notes on more nasty little horror books to read 👀

4

I have full faith you will provide way more nasty horror books to add to this list đŸ«¶đŸŒ

7

I appreciate that, Billyam đŸ«¶đŸœ I will try to live up to the hype

4

I‘m looking forward to reading it in a few weeks, I‘ve been waiting for this book the whole year. I can‘t wait 👀

4

I hope you enjoy it!

4

I'm surprised Lobster isn't on here yet 🩞

7

hi yes, i've seen Lobster and this is no shade to you, but since you're the fifth person who's suggested the book, i want to explain my hesitancy that's going to sound haterade so my apologies to you directly.

this is a silly list but something i know a lot of PB users genuinely respect bc it embodies the "word of mouth", the TBR train, the "yoink" or whatever behavior that is PB. this is a list that shows organic interest over a long period of time bc we see our friends read it, their friends read it, and so forth. not people randomly commenting on others activity cards about something lobster nor gaining 2000 points in one forum. it's clear that there is a movement to get the most diabolically weird book on the Most Discussed and on this list in a very performative way, and that does not embody PB to me nor the purpose of this list. I will not promote clout or point farming behavior. I want this list to preserve the genuine cultural zeitgeist energy that PB has and we all love. this is no disrespect to those that have read the book, those interested, etc., it's not even about the book, it's the energy around it that i'm not a fan of and i will reject for future books that show the same behavior.

33

also, i’m very unclear on how you arrived at someone farming 2000 points in the (i’m assuming) Lobster forum??? at 5 points per post/comment, even with a very generous 10 upvotes (which most of the comments have not reached), an individual user would have to have made 133(!?!) comments to get to 2000 points. which hasn’t happened, as far as i can see.

6

Curious about this too đŸ€”

5

i totally get not adding a book that you feel took off in an “inorganic” way but as someone who has participated in reading some of these “diabolically weird” books that end up on most discussed - at least for me personally it has nothing to do with clout or performance. it’s about reading something totally unhinged and discussing it with friends. without pagebound and the forums, i never would have discovered that i like reading just the most bizarre books available and i consider having the opportunity to discuss them with others to be a gift and a privilege. and something i would never have the chance to do irl.

16

I agree with you @alexz. Also to @notbillnye total support of not adding a book for whatever reason any list maker chooses. I read Lobster with the surge on PB. Because it became accessible to me, finally. It’s been on my ThriftBooks wishlist so long it’s at the bottom, that’s years for me. I had no clue there were disingenuous motives behind a popular book and I wonder how that is determined? I don’t know what to look for/avoid with clout chasing/point farming here on PB.

15

That’s where I’m at. Where’s the line that determines what makes something point farming or an organic trend? Whose job is it to decide that anyway?

3

the list owner presumably. anyone is free to make their own pb lore list and include the books they want on it. if this list owner feels some activity disqualifies the book from their list that’s their prerogative. ive personally seen people make claims that they can level up quicker by posting in the lobster forum and encouraging others to do so which feels pretty point farmy to me.

25

???? That is wild to me. So bizarre.

hi! i'm only sharing this particular example to answer your question, not to call out anyone or encourage some "point investigation" behavior, which is why names are crossed off. i do not want that, so i won't be engaging further to preserve a community space. image

to reiterate my above comment, this is not about the diabolically weird book—there are two "weird" books on the list—or the people who read them, and i'm glad pagebound has been a place for you to make friends and discuss them! my rationale is solely the behavior surrounding the book and how people came to learn about it on pageound. i'm not debating or gatekeeping what's PB lore, there are books on this list i haven't read or tbr'd, and there are ones that others suggested, as per my pinned comment.

20

you’ve said you won’t engage further and i, in no way, expect a response. you’ve provided your concluding thoughts and i wish to share mine as well. to start, i fully support your decision not to include Lobster on your list despite its perceived popularity. i understand that you’ve made certain observations that have coloured your view of Lobster in a negative light. i appreciate the example you’ve provided of, i’m assuming two?, users discussing the “point-farming” potential of Lobster. despite the anecdotal experience of the user in this example, after looking through the Lobster forum and reviews, the 2000 point potential math still ain’t mathing. but that is beside the point. i’m also thankful that i did not observe anything of this sort in the group of users i follow and engage with. however, i think it’s entirely unfair and also unfounded, to paint everyone who interacted with Lobster with this same brush. from my personal observations, excitement around reading and discussing the book was mostly, if not entirely, genuine. i observed a group of users getting excited about tbring and reading a strange French novella. and i say this as someone who (has tbred) not read Lobster and made to the best of my recollection a total of one comment in the Lobster forum. i think it’s unfair to suggest that readers are on some sort of mission to get “diabolically weird” books on most discussed. as far as i can see, it’s a consequence, not a goal. and with respect to perceived “point-farming” what is the difference between being an active participant in the forum of a book like Lobster and being an active participant in the forum of one of the readalong books which have a much larger group of readers? intention to farm sure (which i believe is isolated to a small group), but beyond that this is a genuine question. i have taken this to heart, as a buddy reader of “weird” books and as someone who considers sharky a friend. i honestly don’t care about this list, you can do as you choose with it. but i hope in the future, you will take some of this into consideration before making blanket statements about readers of a certain book.

4

Would Married to the Alien Cowboy by Ursa Dax qualify? I read it in December after I picked it from the Saddle Up, Sweetheart Quest. It wasn't a very populated forum then, but I feel like it's been steadily growing for the last few months, with more and more people joining. But maybe it doesn't fit a strict TBR train definition, idk đŸ€·â€â™€ïž I thought I'd still make the suggestion â˜ș

7

They have been amazing experience for me at least đŸ€ŁđŸ€ŁđŸ€Ł i saw you read it, so i decided to give it a try, and let say I have only read alien romance ever since đŸ€ŁđŸ€ŁđŸ€Ł

4

It's full of positive vibes and I love seeing more and more people joining on the fun đŸ„° gotta love the alien cowboys đŸ€

3

The feels are very addictive!

5

I've legitimately made new friends because of this book! The story itself is so sweet and wholesome that it creates instant fans, and fosters a lot of goodwill between readers whenever pretty much any of us see it pop up in our feed from a new person! I've noticed there are multiple little groups of people that turn into one big group over the book so it would definitely fit the spirit of a list like this.

6

ahhhh what a lovely suggestion Indie, i second this motion! đŸ™‚â€â†•ïž gotta appreciate the alien cowboys ♡

5

I definitely missed the Silver Under Nightfall lore - what’s the story there?

Making the list, and with TWoV, is honestly one of the highlights of the year. This list is so iconic and historic!

4

I think Sky Daddy has earned its place on this iconic list! I don’t think I can thank @notlizlemon enough for making all of us read it

6

😂😂😂 I am not an influencer but I will always try to influence people to read Sky Daddy I am so glad you loved it too!!

You are not an influencer, you are a CEO and I’m your newest recruit who is ready to make your down line grow, chiefđŸ«Ą

5

Not the down line 😂😂😂😂 I’m dead

4

P..Pigeon Watching? Okay fine I am a little curious ..

5

I WIN

5

I feel VERY influenced to read Mad Sisters of Esi. VERY. I mean... VERY.

5

I implore you to give in to temptation đŸ™‚â€â†•ïž

5

Instantly available on libby. Well... I guess I know what my next read will be!

3

I'm just sad it doesn't have the audiobook too. Might need to subscribe to some audiobook platform, as I'm so used to do immersive reading and don't want to support audible... Maybe just use the free trial? đŸ€” I wouldn't be supporting them...

2

Want to do a buddy read? I have that on my list 😉

3

Omg yes! When can you start?

3

I'm thinking January? Yourself? I have a few I still want to finish by the end of this year and trying to be realistic.

3

Hm.. I was thinking December. I ended up getting it from NetGalley, I don't know how review deadlines work there

3

You go ahead! I look forward to reading your review â˜ș

3

đŸ«¶ sweet as ever!

😭😭😭 the DNF color being bright ass pink is so abrasive This list is all white and then one bright pink color for Spread Me It’s like yelling at me Alright I get it, I’m a failure 🙄

5

nothing to fail at 😭 our enjoyment or lack thereof of the pyramid scheme books are subjective, it's the traumabonding we have along the way that adds to the PB experience đŸ«¶đŸŒ

5

I haven't seen it suggested yet but Palimpsest by Catherynne M. Valente might be one to keep an eye on. It was one of the most TBRed books of the day when @seema posted their review.

5

I have found the pyramid scheme!!!!

4

đŸ™ŒđŸŒđŸ™ŒđŸŒ go forth and spread the PB word!!

1

and which are you going to read next???

3

you didn't!! a few others have commented the same book today so it's def making it's rounds 😆

1

OPE lol, my bad! I got my first downvote and I was so scared, immediately like omg, what did I do?! This is my fav place on the internet, did not want to cause issues!

5

you haven't done anything wrong, not sure what's going on, but i wouldn't worry about it 💖💖

3

I must request that you please add Lobster by Guillaume Lecasble. @Sharky-97 started quite the revolution 🩞

4

i've seen it! i responded here :)

2

Gotha gotcha 😊 makes perfect sense. Sorry I didn't catch the pervious comment about it (my rather old phone starts to lag the more I scroll, so I only went to far down the suggestions you see đŸ€Ł)

5

no worries, seeing the hype pb energy is fun 😄

2

I am the 100th upvote to this list ( very proud moment honestly) This covers half my Tbr ! The PB gods will be so proud of me. SO PROUD!

4

What a fun idea! Here are a few that I seen around: a. Poets Square: A Memoir in Thirty Cats: which I think I will credit you? b. Chain-Gang All-Stars: @crybabybea c. Atlas of AI: Power, Politics, and the Planetary Costs of Artificial Intelligence: have no idea who but I have seen this going around a bit d. Katabasis and Everything Is Tuberculosis: The History and Persistence of Our Deadliest Infection: everyone here?
